Word Tips

Shrinking a document to fit the page when printing it.

If you've created a document and one or two lines spill over onto a new page, you can use the "Shrink to Fit" feature to fit everything on the page. Choose File, Print Preview and click on the Shrink to Fit button.

Undoing an AutoCorrect in Word.

Sometimes, Word’s AutoCorrect feature can be a hassle if you do not want what you are typing to be changed. If you type something that is AutoCorrected, you can easily undo the Auto Correct. To do this:

  • Type what you want to type, and let Microsoft Word AutoCorrect it.
  • Press the Backspace key.

Now the word you type will be exactly the way you want it.

Undoing previous actions

Selecting Edit, Undo will undo your last action. Word, however, stores a list of your last one hundred edits and you can selectively undo any one of these. To see the list click on the down arrow beside the undo button and select the one you want to undo from the list.

Disabling Word’s auto number and bullet feature. Centering a page vertically

Microsoft Word’s auto number and bullet feature may be great when if you need them, but if you don’t, you may want to turn it off.  To do this, simply place your cursor anywhere in your paragraph that you do not want to have numbers or bullets. Then click the Numbering button (it has a 1, 2, and 3 on it with lines after the numbers) on the toolbar.

A page of text, such as a title page of a document, can be centered vertically. If the document consists of more than one page and only the first page is to be centered vertically, a section break must be inserted at the end of the page by selecting Insert, Break, then Next Page. To center the page, position the cursor on the first page, select File, Page Setup, Layout, and select Center from the Vertical Alignment box. The Apply to box should indicate the formatting will be applied to This Section.

Deleting a Text Box

The only way to completely delete a text box in Word is to first click on the border of the text box and then press Delete.  Otherwise, the text box may still remain.

Automatically Updating Dates.

If you have a form letter that you use frequently, Microsoft Word's can automatically insert the current date every time you print. Just insert the date with the "Date and Time" command (Insert menu) instead of typing it and be sure the "Insert as Field" option in the lower left corner of the dialogue box is on. Word will insert the then current date every time you print. If the option is off when you make the insertion, the initial date remains fixed.
